A Movie Review in the Scope of Transactional Analysis Theory: Winter Sleep

Abstract

Transactional Analysis (TA) is seen as a comprehensive approach to understand individuals' behaviors and communication styles. Although it is easy to realize and concretize some of the concepts of the theory in daily life, it is thought that the examples in the movie Winter Sleep will be useful in order to understand some abstract concepts of the theory. In this study, Winter Sleep was analyzed by document analysis method. First, the film was watched independently by the researchers once, and possible sample scenes were grouped. The relevant scenes were watched again by the researchers and the examples were noted according to the TA. The researchers discussed their views on the samples and reached a consensus. From the scenes in the movie, examples of the concepts of Ego States, Transactions, Strokes ,Time Configuration, Life Positions and Scenario Analysis were found. Winter Sleep is a movie that contains elements of TA approach. The movie can be used in educational applications to embody the concepts of theory that are relatively difficult to understand, especially Game Analysis, Strokes and Scenario Analysis. It is thought that it will be useful to watch the movie Winter Sleep and discuss it within the scope of theory in undergraduate and graduate programs that have TA approach in the education content.
